Sikh Sports Club was started seven years ago as an initiative to understand whether there was a need for sports activities in the South Asian community. The Club started with just 50 participants and has grown to an outstanding 1200 youths registered in 2008.

As the South Asian community grows and integrates into the Canadian lifestyle they are increasingly realizing the importance of youth involvement in Sports. Many parents and older students are also realizing the importance of either volunteering or being actively involved in their childrens lives. For this reason we have over 70 volunteers who devote their time to helping us run and provide these services to youth. We realize that not every parent has the resources to enroll their children in sports teams therefore we register some children for free and provide them with the essential uniforms and equipment. Had it not been our volunteers we would not provide such a valuable service to our community.

Sikh Sports Club provides the following services:
• Soccer tournaments and practices for youth. With separate teams for girls and boys
• Bhangra (South Asian dancing) classes for interested youth, free of charge.
• Tutoring for youth that need extra help with their homework or classes. This ensures that school is not sacrificed due to participation in our sports activities. It also encourages education above all.
• Annual Picnics for all Club participants and their families
• Annual awards ceremonies to recognize player achievements.

Some of the organizations key goals are listed below:

To provide adults and youth with an active lifestyle in order to ensure positive growth.
To integrate Physical Activity with Entertainment and Education so that all youth are positively rounded.
To provide girls a chance to participate in Sports activities.
To provide low-income families with a chance to provide sports activities for their children

Sikh Sports Club has followed these goals in order to reach where we are at the present time. Annual picnics are held for all youth and parents free of charge. This gives them a chance to interact with each other and allows children to have a fun experience in a safe environment. We were also the first Club to offer South Asian girls a chance to participate in sports activities. In 2007 we had enough girls registered for twenty full teams. Each year we are able to provide awards for all our players. This gives children a feeling of achievement and acknowledgement. It also drives them to work hard during the season. The awards ceremony is held at a banquet hall and is once again free of charge for all our participants, their families and our volunteers. Combined with awards recognition this event is truly a combination of achievement and entertainment. This provides a great end of season event.

We feel that our services have been increasingly successful an parents truly value our services in that they can be sure that their child is in safe hands an not actively engaged in drugs or other activities that would get them in trouble.

Our services also allow parents to be actively involved in their childs life providing them with an open ground for communication with their child. When South Asians first move to Canada they are faced with many barriers such as language barrier. When their children grow up and start integrating intro mainstream culture it can be difficult for them to understand their children and keep an open communication with them. We provide South Asians a chance to have a common interest with their children allowing for a better flow of communication.
